Study Abroad: Summer Programs
Summer offers a rewarding opportunity to get a taste of living abroad while learning about a new culture or enhancing foreign language skills. If you are considering summer study abroad it is important to think about what you would like to gain from your experience. What are your goals? Do you want to focus on language acquisition while immersed in a non-English speaking program? Are you interested in area studies courses in a foreign culture? Is there a particular topic you would like to explore while living outside your customary environment?
The location, length, academic focus, and price of summer study abroad programs are broad, and the choices may be daunting. The Off-Campus Study office can guide you in the right direction, including selecting safe destinations. We encourage you to research the program and the program provider with regard to academic quality, reputation, and availability of student feedback, as well as dates, number of students in the program, and safety measures in case of an accident or emergency. Program Fees and what optons are included in this fee is also an important consideration as Financial Aid through CMC is not available for summer study abroad as CMC is not in session. Does the program fee include airfare? Airport pick up? Some meals? All meals? Any meals? Housing for some or the entire length of the program? Excursions? International Health Insurance? The ISIC Card? Visa fees?
If you would like to receive transferable credit for your summer study abroad, make certain to contact CMC's Office of the Registrar before you finalize your plans. Students are eligible for credit for study abroad during the summer only if both the program and the courses are approved in advanced by the CMC Registrar. Approval by department chairs or faculty does not guarantee credit for summer study abroad. It is each student's responsibility to submit detailed information on the programs abroad to the CMC Registrar as soon as possible. Credit for summer study abroad is not guaranteed, even if a program is offered by an accredited American academic institution.
In some cases, the Registrar cannot guarantee transfer credit for summer study abroad programs in advance due to insufficient information and the vast number of summer study abroad programs available. Some programs offered by well-known academic institutions are not part of the regular curriculum and provide travel or enrichment experiences, but not necessarily academic experiences. In that case, the final determination may need to be made by the Academic Standards Committee upon review of materials provided by the student. Summer study abroad program sites that have been reviewed and approved for semester study by the Off-Campus Study Committee will receive favorable consideration. No credit will be granted for programs reviewed but not approved by the Off-Campus Study Committee, or for programs reviewed but not recommended for approval by the Director of Off-Campus Study.
